Better Apps for Google's Project Glass (or "The Commercial I Would Have Made")

The hype seems to have died down a little for Google's "Project Glass" since their first promotional video was released, but I thought I'd make a post about it anyway. I was kind of disappointed, as where many, by the showcase of features in the commercial.

Although this is probably not a complete demonstration of the eventual uses for the device, I wanted to see more than just a smart phone that happens to go on your face. I wanted to see stuff like, well, I'll just show you...

  2. The commercial definitely needed more augmented reality, to be sure.

    1. I don't think AR is the direction they're really going with this device. They kept emphasizing that they designed the device to "get out of your way." AR is a very immersive experience, and I think they wanted to be more unobtrusive.

Additionally, AR requires pretty strong hardware to work well on actual environments (besides the simple Yelp Monocle type). Modern phones aren't exactly seamless even when working in environments that have QR-like graphics printed to help with orientation. When it comes to real-world environments, it's janky as all hell. Take a look at Word Lens. It translate signs in real time via the camera. Really impressive, really innovative, but still really janky. And that's just for simple text replacement on flat surfaces.

  4. Loved the "Ad Blocked"! Were you as disappointed as I was that Google IO spent so much time hyping Project Glass but didn't show the display once?

    1. Indeed I was. As for ad blocking, I imagine they'll actually go into the exact opposite direction unfortunately.

    2. I would hope they could understand the situation and allow for alternative ads to replace it. Either Nike or a healthier option.

    1. Sarah, thank you, glad to hear it! I think we're all looking forward to seeing what it'll eventually become. If there's any way I can be involved over there, let me know!

    2. Sarah, you should definitely get in contact with this astronaut and give a prototype to take into space to record his journey (and promote your product)!: http://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/14vsse/i_will_be_living_in_space_from_december_until_may/
